big girls don't cry...

but they damn sure lie, look you in the eye saying you're their only.

This weekend was a good test of "How To Act In Public" vs. "How Not To Act In Public." Went out to a few random locations, old haunts and new regular hang-outs. At every single location, I saw someone that I didn't want to deal with.

Ladies and gentlemen...Special Elvis

Saturday morning started with big plans and lots of good intentions. Jen and I had promised each other that we would be going to yoga every Saturday at 11:30am. Unfortunately this morning I had mis-calculated my budget and couldn't afford to splurge on an hour of brutal body stretches and bruising up my "sitting bones." I sent Jen a quick text to update her on my financial woes, watched a bit of Playhouse Disney (one of my weekend guilty pleasures), and headed back to bed, where I slept until 3:30pm.

When my body finally let me know that it was well-rested enough for the day, I did some household tidying (read: washed 4 dishes and took a bath). Jen let me know that she was on her way over to start an evening of random adventure...only to inform me 5 minutes later that she was on the wrong bus and heading towards Kenmore Square. She corrected her mistake and arrived with plenty of time to spare. Our game plan was to head to the Roxy, enjoy a night with Lily Allen, hopefully scam our way into backstage, and head towards my apartment afterwards. We succeeded in some of these missions - the closest that we came to backstage at the show was Jen having conversation with one of her horn players about The Specials and swooning for his accent (Scottish I think?). I threw $6 away on a 16oz. Bud Light, after spending $1.80 for 24oz of the same at the liquor store down my block. For a little while on the train, I was one of those not-so-classy kids drinking out of a paper bag. Thank goodness nobody took a photo.

After our adventure at the Roxy, it was only 10pm and Jen and I were VERY sure that it was time for karaoke. Lucky for us, the bar down my block was pretty empty, so Jen was able to get a few good songs in - Jukebox Hero and London Calling. We also found love for her in the form of a pretty boy in his early 20s, only to find out that he was actually 33 and preferred the company of men. He was good conversation, constantly pointing out that I did not need to rely on others to buy me a drink, since I already had one in my hand.

The karaoke DJ was not our regular, who opens the night by singing "Brown Eyed Girl" to get the crowd excited. Instead we were greeted with a sub-par cover of an Oasis song, and soon Jen and I were worried that our favorite karaoke celerity, Special Elvis, would not be making an appearance. Special Elvis is, for lack of a better word, special. He sings not only Elvis songs, but throws in the Dave Clark Five, Roy Orbison, and anything else that he struggles to hit the high notes on. He isn't the most on-pitch singer, but he is a crowd pleaser. Luckily, Special Elvis was running late, and greeted us with a tear-worthy rendition of Lionel Ritchie's "Hello". He later informed us of his performance schedules and where we can catch his act during the week.

As we made our way home in the cold at 2:30am, we were both glad that we hadn't put our bodies through a morning of yoga. Catching up on our sleep and preparing for an evening of dancing and karaoke was a much more worthwhile way to spend a Saturday.

Birthday bonanza!

Last night was Michael (old neighbor)'s 21st birthday, and Doug and I had promised to take him out on the town. I got home at 9, and Michael was already wasted. I took a shower, got out and he was banging on the door. He then announced that he wanted to rip my towel off of me, I went into my bedroom to get dressed and he tried to break down the door. I slammed the door on his head and said if he did it again I'd break his face.
I continued to get ready, and Jackie (Michael's girlfriend) stumbled down and passed out on my couch. Michael just wanted to let her walk home, so I told Doug to take my car and give her a ride so she got home safe. He did, then came back and we were off on a train to Boylston Street. Michael took his cigarette on the train, and I yelled at him to get up to give his seat to a little old couple. We got off the train, and he was yelling about what bar we were going to go to, etc. We went to the Pour House and he kept trying to talk to girls, just sitting down with them randomly and forcing himself upon them. At that point, I decided to pretend to be his girlfriend and cockblock him. That was pretty funny. We lost him for a half hour, then he just showed up randomly. We walked to a few other bars, he was still sitting down and talking to anyone, buying drinks for others even though it was his birthday.
Finally we made it down to Lansdowne Street, we're walking towards Bill's Bar and I see Greg brown - an old friend who I haven't seen in probably 2 years, was an Ultimate Fighter, super nice guy. Well at that point I was tired of Michael so I was SO happy to see him. He got us into Bill's for free told me that he got me some drink tickets. He was working the door at Jake Ivorys. Then he wandered into Bill's and we talked for a while. Meanwhile, Michael got kicked out ( he went into the ticket booth and was touching the ticket window girls or something, I didn't get the whole story, I wasn't paying attention to him) and talked his way back in, but wasn't allowed to drink anymore. I then told him to start drinking people's drinks left sitting at the bar, of course he did.
So finally I decided it was time to leave, but he had found some random Indian girl and was making out with her in the street. Greg and I were standing by his jeep, where he had his dog sleeping. I kissed the dog and decided I love him more than life - it's a bull mastiff. At that point Michael comes back, tries to get back into Bill's again to pee and they yell at him. I tell Doug to go take care of it. Michael comes back and starts yelling about how all doorguys are uptight suburban pricks, where are they all from? Because Michael is from southie and he is obv. tougher than the door guys. At which point I told him to shut up, because Greg is a door guy who was standing RIGHT THERE listening to Michael's rant. So Greg gets pissed, says that he grew up in Hyde Park. Michael wanders off to find his Indian girl again, and I tell Greg I'm sorry and he says to get him out of there or he'll punch him etc. So I gave Greg my number, and Doug and I walked home, venting about stupid Michael. I get home and passed out on my couch in my underwear for a bit, then was awoken by a text from Greg saying it was a good thing we left when we did, people got shot...and he and I texted til 3:30 am, and I ate some tacos.

I have no idea where Michael slept.

And I'm pretty sure I don't care.

plus and non-plus

+ my current GPA at Northeastern is 3.84. I also rediscovered my high school paperwork, my GPA then was 3.51

- I don't think my work is going to pay for my school anymore. I'm trying not to go into panic overload, but I sense it coming if the anticipated becomes fact.

Monday, October 23

moving beyond the binge drinking.

lots of things on my mind.

-salad spritzer. How lazy are we? We can't measure with a spoon, we have to SPRAY our dressing on?
-I really shouldn't go out and drink with disregard for my body. Good vodka and cheap beer are a sad sad mix, especially when I'm crawling to the bathroom at 5am. Even worse is when I feign interest in a person and then thy in turn think I'm infatuated. No, sir, I'm drunk. There is a big difference.
-Floof loves sitting on my new record player. She's a little teapot, short and stout...
-I start two new classes tomorrow. What the fuck was I thinking with this one? Three classes and full time work. I don't know how, but I need to somehow survive this and keep my GPA above 3.6 or I will be very disappointed in myself.
-I got my halloween costume all lined up and ready to bust out on Friday. Hopefully Saturday and Sunday too, if i can find places to wear it.
-I never thought that I was a size whore, but I am. Whoops.
-My newest fun thing is making drinking games out of television shows. Phil of the Future, How I Met Your Mother, New Adventures of Old Christine...watching for little things and being wasted by ten thirty is the best way to live life. The cat doesn't mind, now that the heat has been turned on in my building she is finally done crying to me about life.
-Sometimes I spend so much time worrying about everyone else, I forget to worry about myself.

it's not a habit, it's cool.

Today I went into the liquor store on my block to get smokes, and the guy at the counter questioned why I wasn't buying a case of beer. He then reminded me I bought an 18-pack on Saturday (TWO DAYS AGO) and shouldn't I be done with that yet?

Sunday, October 15

I'm healthy, I think?

I just thought about it, and I have barely any meat in my diet. When I do eat meat, I get pretty sick from it. Right now, the only things I have in my house that are made of meat are some chicken tenders and a pepperoni pizza. I have a bit of mozzarella and some old milk that...I should...probably get rid of...I think it's dated Oct 4?

I'm at the point where I really don't think I need the meat in my diet, sometimes maybe some chicken in a salad? I really need to kick the coffee from my daily routine too, so that I can stop taking in all the half and half plus the sugar. Tea works just as well and is better for me.

Saturday, October 14

tables are funny like that...

Anyone who knows me, know that I am a big fan of blowing people off. I don't like to put myself into uncomfortable situations or something that I can't totally control. So rather than be on my guard, I'll stay home and watch that 70s show. Tonight I was supposed to get together with someone from high school, who I never really ended things well with. I know she had eating disorders and didn't really go anywhere in life, and I was a little leery about what we would talk about and how the night would go.

Guess what? She blew me off. Didn't call, text or anything. I think I don't mind.

Tuesday, October 10

responsibility...not quite yet.

Today was my best example of procrastination in a while. I put off writing TWO essays for my English class until I got to work this morning. I had two paragraphs completed before I left home but I really needed to start from scratch on both. So of course, I did less work than I should have so I could focus on my writing. Goody for me, I got an A on my paper on New York City, and I find out my grade on the Star Wars paper next Tuesday.

After feeling overly-confident I came home and realized I haven't touched my Algebra in over a week. We have quizzes and assignments due online every week, and if you miss a deadline you lose a point on your final letter grade. This assignment was due October 1st. Crud. Luckily I was able to bang out all the work in less than two hours and hopefully the lateness can be overlooked. Some people are JUST NOW turning in assignments from week 1 and we are already up to week 5.

This really should be a lesson for me to sit down and focus more on my work instead of distracting myself with knitting, telly and online bingo.

Side note. My algebra book was $140, its shiny and bumpy and has an orange tree on the cover.

Saturday, September 23

living on the mean streets.

Last night I was heading home from work and traffic was at a standstill within 3 blocks of my apartment, so I took the resourceful method and took some back roads to get to my usual parking street. Every day I look forward to receiving my mail, so I turned the corner anticipating credit card offers, Land's End catalogs and electric bills but unstead I found police tape. I tried to sneak under it, assuming there was a car accident and just blocked off the whole block. A police officer came up to me and said I couldn't cross the line, and that's when I saw the blood on my front steps. Another street-clothes wearin' cop suggested I go get some chinese food, since it might be a while. Not sure what to do, I walked down my block and saw my liquor store buddies locked inside their own shop, and all over the sidewalk were little cones, arrows and numbers - total CSI in progress.

I called Lissa to give her a heads up since she was on her way to my place, if she got stuck in traffic. Then I called Doug and we scoped out the whole scene and took photos. According to my liquor store pals, three girls got into a fight. One of them started getting stabby, and then another pulled out a machete. MACHETE. There was one girl in a cop car, and her friends later arrived and opened the door trying to bust her out.

I haven't seen anything online yet in police blotters, the cops referred to it as an "urban disagreement." Here are my exclusive phone-photos...

bzzz bzzz...

I've been out of control busy. Let's see if I can find some highlights in my mess of a world...

-school started again. Taking English 1 and Algebra 1. The Algebra is online, and I didn't find the course blackboard until today, a full 12 days after class has started. Luckily it all turned out to be mindless formulas that Aubri and I quizzed eachother with via AIM at work. If you can complete an algebra problem via instant messenger, it wasn't that tough. English is alright, I am going to have to read aloud at least twice, and I don't know how I feel about that. One girl in my class WILL get punched before the semester ends - she has made us aware she studied latin for eight years, went to Dover-Sherborn for high school, and and is only taking this course because Northeastern didn't accept the dozens of extensive English courses she took at her other fancy college. I'm just hoping work will be paying for school since these aren't accounting-focused courses. But I NEED them to get my accounting degree. They must see that, right?

-I've been knitting a TON. Making a chicken viking hat for Jacob (Jess' boyfriend), starting the big stockpile of Christmas gifts, and making pincushions out of fabric remnants. Red with white polka dots = strawberries. Crafting has become a new weird release for me. And it's a great self-taught pleasure.

-Floof misses the air conditioner. She sits on it all night, waiting for me to turn it back on.

Monday, August 28

the price of staying alive.

I've been very budget lately, so I have discovered the cheapest meals out there without losing my pride. I won't buy store brand ANYTHING, so don't even bother to tell me I'll save another 10 cents by getting Stop & Shop peanut butter. I like skippy. dang it.

PB&J - 44cents
Fluffernutter - 52cents
cup-o-noodles - 23cents
ramen noodles - 12cents
grilled cheese - 78cents (i like 3 slices of cheese, so sue me)

Do you know any supercheap yet very filling meals? please feel free to share. Laura loves food.

Maybe I'll catch fire.

Haven't updated in a few days, so let's recap the past weekend.

Thursday:
I went to work, came home and took a nap. Woke up, took a shower and took the T to the Arlington stop. This might seem like no big deal to you, but I have NEVER taken the T by myself except for going home from school, which is 3 stops away. and free. Never have I had to pay money to get onto a train all by myself, locate a seat, and navigate my way to a destination I've never been to. Needless to say, I had a hot panic attack while on the train, riding backwards. Having to run to catch the train and having dumbass Kris calling every 5 minutes didn't help matters much. I get off at the stop I was assigned to, try to call Andy but my phone gets no service so I start freaking out and walking 50 feet in one direction, turning around and going back to my first location. Eventually I saw Andy (sort of, since I didn't have glasses on) and we headed to a bar called the Rattlesnake. After getting in a battle of wits with the bartender and losing (she didn't appreciate me asking for a Bud Light, since they "don't serve ANY Budweiser products."), I ordered a High Life for an astronomical $4 and socialized with grad school students. Even though most of them were younger than me, I didn't feel like I was their peer at all, it was awkward, but I had Andy there to keep everything copasetic. We kept drinking until it started to rain (we were on a patio/porch area, so the rain was very noticable), at which point I was informed that we were going to have to walk home because the trains had stopped running for the night. Walk. In the rain. 3+ miles. I have never been more glad to be wearing sneakers and having a friend for a neighbor. I got to see the reflective pool at the Christian Science Center for the first time, and even with the wind and rain, it was pretty spectacular.

Made it home by 3am, worked Friday, slept through Friday night. Then came...

Saturday:
I woke up with noon with no real intention of going anywhere before 8am, when I had two different invitations in two different directions. I checked my email, and to my pleasant surprise, James (home from Japan) was heading to the Fearless Vampire Killers show in Revere at 2pm! I hustled my ass into the shower, picked out a specatcular wardrobe (aka jeans and a tanktop) and rushed up to Revere. Upon arrival, I was informed that the bar was closed, so I sent good ol' Garvey to the liquor store. He did not disappoint, returning with a six-pack of High Life tall boys. Best $6 of the day. Eventually the bar opened up, and I blew $50 before I realized that I hadn't saved and money for gas the next week. Stoli Raz and grenadine proceeded to kick my ass as I heckled bands and wandered around. While outside, I heard the Clockwork Orange intro, threw my purse at the bartender and proceeded to smash everything in way. I took off my flip flops, punched people in the head, and somehow made it back to my car in one piece. After getting home and SWEARING to myself that I was headed to Pete's for his party or to Providence for Suicide Saturday, I passed out and came to at 11:30. Wandered around in jammies, talked to Jackie and Michael, and Kris called me to ask for something. Not sure what, but I got angry and yelled at him for calling me a bitch. Who knows where that conversation went or how it was ended. I promised Jackie and Michael that I would take them with me to my parents' house the next day for Mary's birthday party, but that they needed to wake me up at 9am. Which brings us to...

Sunday:
9am came and went, and I didn't wake up to Jackie's calls or her knocking on the door. Around noon, I woke up and wandered around, decided my hand was officially broken, and called my parents and lied my ass off. Told them I had been to the hospital and it hurt too much to go anywhere, sorry to miss the party. And I went back inside and sat on my butt all day. Watched Jersey Girl and Someone Like You. Both made me sob. I ignored my phone and tried to not talk to the neighbors. Doug wanted to hang out, I wanted to stay inside and weep. Plus my hand was still killing me, and my feet were starting to ache as well. Around 8pm or so, Peter decided to hang out, so I showered and cleaned up a bit for him. When he showed up, my heart just ached, it made me realize how long it's been since I sw him. But of course I was an emotional omlette at that point from bawling at chick flicks (very unlike me, by the way). So I made him sit with me and watch the Emmys as we discussed fashion choices, good television shows and tattoos. I do love that boy, he knows how to make me feel normal when my world seems turned upside down. Of course, I can tell he's about to jump into his seasonal slump so I might as well frame a photo of him and say "see you in April".

I think that sums it up. My life isn't as exciting as I remember it to be.

Thursday, August 24

time flies...

I was just looking through my bme page, looking for photos of the fatty when he was a kitten. I found an entry from July 2002 about going to see the Cro-Mag reunion tour. I can't believe its been four years since that. Look at where I am now...same job, same everything, just flying solo now instead.

that is all.

Tuesday, August 22

TV has power over me.

Last night I was watching "Wife Swap" on ABC, mainly because all my favorite shows were repeats (How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, New Adventures of Old Christine). Watching people living in filth/immaculate houses motivated me to clean. Up until that point, I had been eating frosting from the can, contemplating baking a cake but then realizing I wouldn't have enough frosting. I do have 4 or 5 cans, but this one will be for snacking, I suppose. So on to the land of cleaning.. First, I did all the dishes, and scrubbed the stove. THen I moved on to the bathroom, where I:
-scrubbed the floor - first with a swiffer, then on my hands and knees with clorox bleach wipes, then with clorox spray and a sponge.
-scrubbed the toilet, all over, inside and out.
-cleaned the mirror, sink, walls and sides of the shower stall with clorox wipes/windex
-scrubbed the tub with clorox and scrubbing bubbles, then a sponge and water (that took 45 minutes easy).
-boiled my toothbrush and microwaved my sponges.

it may seem a little much, but cleaning is very satisfying. I like to be able to sit back and look at my space and know its MINE and it's clean.

Monday, August 21

didn't I just see a commercial for that...?

Hollywoodland vs. Black Dahlia. I saw these commercials tonight, and I can't figure out which is which until nearly the end. Doesn't anyone remember what happens when the same movie is released at the same time? Those Katie Holmes vs. Mandy Moore (maybe?) "I'm the president's daughter" movies...does anyone remember EITHER of those movies? And there was a point where everything that came out needed to be romantic and shakespeare-an. Bleh. I'm glad I missed all of them too.

On other notes. Remember when all we needed in life was $3 to get a cookie from the mall, and to get one of our parents to drive us there and a friend's parents to pick us up? And maybe another $2 to spend at the candy store. Nothing really vital to focus on, bills were some weird scary thing that parents kept filed away in their important area...the area you didn't even WANT to look around in, it didn't catch your interest at all. Sure, we could wear the same shirt to school and to sleep in and to play in the woods and everything else. Mine was my Columbia hoodie, and the photos exists somewhere to prove it.

Mondays and Wednesdays were my night to do the dishes. Sometimes I would make tacos, but more often than not I would burn the shells. Whoops! Napping on the couch was cute, not lazy. I was always a fan of lounging on the floor next to the heater.

I don't wish I was 5 or 15. 20 was fun, but 9 and 10 were so ideal. TV and a strict bedtime. Where's MY wayback machine?

Thursday, August 17

A recap of my Wednesday.

Last night, I got home around 6:15pm, as per the usual. I grabbed my mail, came inside and greeted Floof, gave her some dinner, and threw on my jammy pants. Within 15 minutes, Michael (next door neighbor, courier, decent guy) knocked on my door, as he typically does. Michael is only 20 and relies on me for a steady supply of alcohol. He explained to me that Jackie, his girlfriend, had the keys and he was locked out until 8pm when she got home. They only own one set of keys, so this happens to one of them daily. I sat back down and watched some telly, as he ran up to Doug's apartment (Doug lives above me and is alright at times, Lissa doesn't believe that he exists). Michael asked Doug to get him a 40, and paid for it in nickels and dimes. Meanwhile, I was sitting inside, looking on craigslist for a nice couch. (and I found one, I think!)

Michael and Doug came back an hour or so later, and Michael poured himself a shot of tequila and a shot of Jameson. At that point, Doug started up the grill so I headed up there. Michael came up with a GLASS full of Jameson. Jackie came home, I told her to come sit with us. Michael went downstairs, came back with a BUTCHER KNIFE and started THROWING IT. I distracted him by sending him to get cigarettes, as I hid the knife in Doug's sink under some dishes. He came back with smokes and ANOTHER glass of Jameson, and said to me "thanks for the iced tea" to which I responded "I don't have iced tea."

He stormed off and I realized it was 8pm, time for Rock Star Supernova!!! So I went down and told Doug to come back with burgers so we could watch TV together. Jackie sat with us, but left to go to her apt and came back 30 or so minutes later, crying, saying he locked the door, but she had the keys so she opened it, he had pushed ALL THE FURNITURE against the door so she couldn't get in. So we sat in my apt. and she went back in 45 minutes or so. Jackie then came back sobbing, saying he stole the wheel off the bike she JUST bought the day before. He totally trashed the apt too...broke EVERYTHING, threw makeup all over the walls, ripped all their clothes, broke her digicam. But he didn't take his phone or his bag, just left with a bike wheel.

So she was sobbing, and I started cleaning. She called Michael's mom and told her, we finished cleaning and drank a beer on the porch, then Michael's mom called. Apparently he went over there, demanded her car so he could go to Stop & Shop (he told me earlier he wanted to rob them but needed a getaway car), she said no. He asked for money and she said no. He said he was going to go sleep in the train station, but passed out on the porch, woke up and stormed off. Then he came back home without the bike wheel. He was crying and I started screaming at him to go back to his mom's. Finally, I decided to go to bed after Jackie refused to sleep at my place.

At this point, I don't want him living there at ALL. They both move out on the 31st, so that's 2 more weeks. But I think he needs to go sleep it off at mamma's from now on.

Welcome to Boston.

Me and Katie - my bra did not want to stay hidden that night.
And clearly I did not want to stay sober...

Always looking for someone to give the stink-eye to.
That's Katie and Liz (I think?)

Floof has this weird thing about biting her toenails. chomp chomp.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
At least you can tell she's mama's girl.

rage, it's all the rage.

I have a billboard on the roof of my building. After a month of staring at the verizon guy asking me if I could hear him now, I have finally upgraded. Now featured is a VW beetle, with a caption reading "rage, it's all the rage." and I think I love it. I can't figure out why, but I throw those words back and forth in my head often when I drive home and stare at it.

Floof left me a hairball next to my side in bed today. I think she's trying to tell me that her hairball-reducing kibbles aren't getting the job done. Or she just loves me THAT much.

Wednesday, August 9

Ain't no cure for the summertime blues.

I am ridiculously addicted to infomercials, but I'm very particular about which ones to watch. For example, anything telling me how many pant sizes I can drop in 3 weeks - swiftly aborted. But if I see a blast from the past celebrity telling me how much he enjoys his 10-disc collection of country hits, or that jolly chubby grandma cooking up magical creations using cherry coke, snickers bars or biscuits...I am enthralled. I never actually buy any of the items, minus the bun-and-thigh-max, which I broke and threw away. Maybe that's why I hate the exercise commercials? But I have busied myself over the past 2 workdays (read: wasted time) by downloading over 150 doo wop hits, putting them in order as they would appear on this 10-disc set.

Is that normal? Am I being clever and thrifty? Do I just hate my job THAT much?

Either way, I like to listen to Little GTO while I plot my commute home. After yesterday's traffic jam, I need a back-up plan. And a pack of smokes.
